Col du Tourmalet
The 'Raids'
Col du Tourmalet The French have a long tradition of 'Raids' - long distance challenges, from one landmark to another. The most famous of these is the Paris-Dakar rally, for cars and motorbikes. Cycling also has its famous challenges, and for 2007 we are proud to announce French Cycling Holidays packages for the two most famous of them all. The Raid PyrénéenAdministered by the Cyclo-Club de Bearn, the Raid takes you from Hendaye on the Atlantic to Cerbere on the Mediterranean, covering 710 kilometres. Doesn't sound like much? Throw in 18 major cols, including all of the Giants of the Pyrenees, and the fact that only 100 hours are allowed to complete the ride (including sleep!), and its clear that the Raid Pyreneen is a major challenge, and anybody who successfully gets the medal for completing the ride has something to be very proud of.
Experienced staff are on hand Setting out at 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning from the port of Hendaye with a 'carnet' to be stamped at control points along the route, over the next 100 hours you will tackle Cols like the Aubisque, Tourmalet, Aspin, Peyresourde, and the Portet d'Aspet before dipping your toes in the blue waters of the Mediterranean at midday on Friday. Hotels and food are to our usual exemplary standard, and the minibus will sweep the route dishing out water, energy bars and drinks, so you won't have to worry about loading yourself up with provisions. All in all one of the most challenging - and satisfying - things you can do on two wheels! The Raid Des AlpesThe 'Raid des Alpes' (or 'La Randonnée Alpine Côte d'Azur-Léman') is a cycle trial traversing the French Alps from Thonon les Bains on Lake Geneva in the north to Antibes on the Cote d'Azur in the south - a total of 470 miles (752 km) and taking in 43 major and minor cols. Next year (2007) we are organising a special 'Raid' not only are we completing the recognised "North to South" route. French Cycling is also tackling the "South to North" route from Antibes to Thonon les Bains.
The 'Raid' is renowned world wide and is recognised as a major challenge in the world of cycling randonnees, crossing many of the classic Alpine climbs including the Cormet de Roselend, Col du Mont Cenis, Col d'Izoard and the Col de la Bonnette (Highest Pass in Europe). The Raid is a magnificent challenge event bringing together riders from all corners of the globe. As with all French Cycling Holidays tours you will have a number of experienced staff looking after your every need, so that all you have to worry about is keeping the pedals turning… |
